Dreaming and Reality: A Comparison of Interpretive Work in Two Cultures – North American Psychoanalysis and an Indigenous Culture in the Amazon Rainforest
Presenters: Beth Kalish Ph.D.,PsyD. and Charles P. Fisher, M.D.
Deep in the Amazon rainforest of southeastern Ecuador, dreaming matters. The lives of an indigenous people, the Achuar, are built around their daily dream analysis process. The dreams are interpreted by elders of the clan, and the dream interpretations are then used as a basis for making individual and group decisions for the day. Dr. Kalish and Dr. Fisher visited with the Achuar on three separate occasions, studied dreams with them, and discussed dream interpreting practices. This presentation will communicate, through film and lecture, their experiences and findings.
Dr. Kalish Ph.D., PsyD. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS), where she served as President. Currently she is on the New Groups Committee of the International Psychoanalytical Association.
Dr. Charles P. Fisher, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) and a Personal and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. (PINC).
Course Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to describe the use of dream life in an indigenous culture to create and communicate an enhanced view of psychic reality.
2) Participants will be able to describe the use of dream interpretation in two cultures and will be able to apply it to clinical work on a daily basis.
3) Participants will be able to connect the practice of dream interpretation in each culture to the overall world view of that society.
4) Participants will be able to distinguish differences and similarities between dream interpreting practices in the two cultures: Achuar dream interpretation and North American Psychoanalysis.
